Professional Background
Education:
Jay has developed extensive knowledge through hands-on experience across multiple sectors.
Career Path:
Jay developed his knowledge and skills in employment law through extensive hands-on experience, working directly with a wide range of clients and cases. Before joining Avensure, he worked for another employment law consultancy, advising clients across a variety of workplace issues. Prior to moving into employment law, Jay spent around 15 years in the hospitality industry, progressing through roles at all levels and eventually running restaurants and bars in Glasgow. He also gained experience in copywriting and SEO management for an Australia-based company. Shifting into employment law was a significant career change, and Jay is proud of how he adapted and built a new path, drawing on his people skills, business understanding, and ability to communicate clearly.
Professional associations and memberships:
Jay works with businesses across many sectors but has particular experience in care, including residential care, domiciliary care, nurseries, and youth homes. He also draws on his extensive background in hospitality to support clients in that sector, understanding the practical realities of maintaining compliance in a fast-moving and often unpredictable industry. This mix of experience allows him to adapt his approach to the unique challenges of each client.
Philosophy and approach to work
“Jay believes in approaching every situation with empathy, clarity, and warmth. Recognising that employment law issues can often be sensitive or unwelcome, he makes it a priority to handle matters professionally while understanding the human side of the challenge. He sees his role as that of a problem-solver, strategic partner, and sounding board – helping clients navigate decisions with confidence and clear direction.”
Personal information
Outside of work, Jay balances keeping busy with taking it easy – often at his wife’s insistence. He enjoys wild swimming and hill walking across Scotland but is equally happy switching off and relaxing for long stretches. He regularly travels back to Glasgow to see family and friends, which always serves as a good reminder of his roots.
